Biggest gain in 5 months for consumer spending

I have been spending a little more lately as I have started getting some commission checks. I have bought more food and supplies, rain barrels, extra cans and gas for the generator, solar panels and batteries, canning supplies, new scope and Bi-pod and other things to help improve my self sufficiency and I guess the economy too.

This weeks preps

I bought this kit from Amazon and it was much cheaper than the four single panels alone not including the parts that came with it.

I began by assembling the cheap PVC frame.

Frame was made of gray PVC and I went ahead and spray painted it black to help protect from the sun.

Next was unpacking and mounting the panels.

I then ran the cables inside my shed and connected them to two batteries in parallel.

Then I connected the charge controller and a 750 Watt inverter that I picked up at Sam's Club for $20.

And now I have electricity in my shed and can use this during power outages in the future.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to mount the panels to the shed roof. I am thinking some aluminum angle brackets and then I am done.

Pet Peave Rant

It's my blog and I can say what I want!

Getting Hired

This is a very true practice today. HR departments control it all except sales. If you do not have the degree you are screened out automatically regardless of qualifications and even exemplary experience.
This is very sad because they are getting, along with the "sheepskin", an individual indoctrinated by the liberal institutions that have no clue about the business world, managing real people or having the skills necessary to excel. In many cases it will take them years to learn, adapt and understand before they can excel in these positions.
Many people (Myself Included) who after graduating high school entered the workforce at the bottom and worked their way through the various levels of a company(s) learning and excelling before moving up. HR departments continually filter these people out in the first round and end up with mostly incompetent managers trying to control employees that know their jobs and are frustrated by the stupidity of PC management.
This model encourages lower productivity, problems between management and employees and reduces loyalty to the employer (ie increased turnover).
There were probably qualified candidates already inside the company that could do the job better but lacking the "almighty sheepskin" were never given a chance to prove themselves. Instead someone who partied for four years on campus usually with government assistance gets hired over an individual with proven experience.

Question; why is the government the nations largest workforce, and with all of the programs already in place why is this needed now?

Kevorkian Economics

An excellent explanation of my observations and conclusions since I "Woke Up" and started paying attention. There are still far to many Americans in that state between consciousness and sleep.  If they do not awaken soon it may be too late for them to prepare at all for the Hard Times Ahead.

Preps in use.

I used these (3 of them) flashlights during the power outage. They are 75 lumens bright and run on three AAA batteries. Cost about twelve bucks at WalMart and run great on rechargeable batteries. I bought them one at a time as I could afford them and will now buy more after using them. They allowed me to light up the neighbors house across the street at night (thought I saw movement) while watching for trouble and are small and easy to carry with a bright light. I highly recommend them or a comparable model as the batteries still have a good charge.

Preps for the week

A week or so ago I was at wally world (Walmart) picking up a few supplies and as is my habit I went to the discounted isle first. There is usually just junk there but I have found a few odds and ends that were useful such as cell phone belt clip holders, candles and other items. But this time I noticed a Bushnell 3x9 scope. I looked it over and it was still in the package undamaged but did not have a price tag on it. I threw it in the cart and kept going, stopping in sporting goods to check the price, it was $80 for the exact same package. So I moved on to what I needed and ran into one of those price check scanners, scope was still in my cart so I scanned it and it came up $40. I went to the local gun shop Saturday before the storm and bought rings and top plate for the AR.

70 hours without power!

Our power came back on today after being out since Saturday. We lived through it and it was not that bad since we had the generator. It is a small portable (5000 running watts) that ran our fridge (and our neighbors) the TVs, cable, internet and some lights. I bought the generator from a friend for $500 who paid $700 for it new and used it about ten hours. This device has already paid for itself by reducing the bitching from A) wife B) mother-in-law C) me. It was not fun but would have been much worse without it. Note to readers: If you can afford it BUY ONE it will be worth it if you ever need it. Maybe not for SHTF but for disaster related I will always have one unless they bury the damn power lines underground.

52 Hours

Fifty two hours running on generator now. Power all around us but not this side of the street. Electric crew showed up an hour before dark and cut the ends of the bad lines and then left for the night. Apparently they will not work after darkness falls and will start again a couple hours after daylight arrives. Sixteen on eight off my ass!

People are still behaving but those without power in the neighborhoods are getting irritable. There are several streets like mine that have been put on the back burners. Crews are going to the largest outages first even if they are right across the street they will leave and go across town rather than get the whole subdivision running before leaving. Maybe I will get power back tomorrow and maybe not. I will keep you posted.

26 hours plus without power

Still running the generator, power has come on all around us but this side of street and houses behind us are still out. More generators can be heard today and everyone has behaved so far. If power is not restored by morning I may stay home from work as Mother-In-Law and Wife do not know to run/fill/shut off generator.

Last night was a full moon and everyone was still out of power and keeping watch outside. Most got power back this morning. Fortunately temperature has remained in 70's low 80's. Generator is now running neighbors fridge as he had a spare 100' cord that would reach our generator.

To release some frustration I took the heater core out of the 68 Chevy as it needs to be replaced before winter. I will get a new one this week and start putting it back together. I like the fact that I can work on this by myself and even climbed in with the 307 engine to get at some bolts today. Working with my hands again makes me feel good, busted knuckles and all!

Bad storm today!

Power has been out for hours and I am running on generator now. Apparently I am the only person on this street that has prepared for this. It should be interesting tonight as it is loud and I have light in a dark neighborhood, however it is a decent neighborhood. I shall keep watch and report later on this as I consider it a good test for what may come to pass.

Preparations

This past weekend I traded my 93 Chevy S-10 for a 68 Chevy C/10. There were several reasons for doing this. I wanted a full size truck. I wanted a vehicle that does not have chips that can be destroyed by EMP from sun activity or worse circumstances. It is far easier and cheaper to work on and maintain, I can even stock up on fewer spare parts.

However it is ugly and I do not like the color as it stands out way to much as a target. Although it has less rust than the 93 I will think about getting the body touched up and painted a different color.

The good news is that it is tight with the engine and almost all of the other parts rebuilt on the original 307 engine. It is strong and will burn the big tires on it. Brakes need work but that and the body/color is about all that needs attention.

My best friend found this and traded a motorcycle for it and rebuilt most of it himself because he knew what I wanted and he wanted the S-10 (Which I bought from his father before he passed and has extremely low mileage and a 4.3 liter engine). Bless you Larry!

I think I will enjoy this old vehicle very much over the coming years.

Last night I cut up cucumbers from the garden and put them in jars. I actually for the first time in my life at 50 friggin years old learned to do something that my grandparents learned as kids because they had too. I made and canned some awesome tasting pickles!

This weeks preps!

I was working this week and had to run to an engineering firm to check some prints for a bid. On the way I passed by a Sam's Club that I have been meaning to join so that I could buy some bulk food for storage. On the way back I stopped and joined and took a quick tour and found a 750W power inverter for $19.95 and bought it. Forty bucks to join for a year and a deal like that right off the bat. I will be going back next week for food as they have good bulk prices.

I have been planning on buying some solar panels (Amazon has a 60W kit for $262) and batteries for back up power that I will put on the new shed when I can afford them. The power inverter was a good deal this week that will let me power some small appliances during an outage when I get it set up. I will post progress on this project as I can afford it.

OK, I am not a terrorist!

Whew, thanks for clearing this up Joe!

I like it!

It rained the other night while I was sleeping so I do not know how much. When I checked the rain barrel it was almost full (Hoo Yah). After two days of 90+ degree temps the garden was dry today so I hooked the hose up to it and began watering. After I watered the entire garden I checked the barrel and it was still almost half full. There is no rain in the forecast for the next few days so I will probably use the rest before it rains again. If the SHTF does happen I will have water to use in the garden and/or put in the water purifier I bought for drinking.

I will buy another barrel when funds allow to increase my storage capacity. Below is one of the Big Berkeys I purchased from Amazon except I got  the one with four white filters. When I use it I will only use two of the filters and save two. I can also use it to help neighbors for favors or trade during hard times.

What we have created!

Productive Americans have allowed this to happen because they have not paid attention to what our government has been doing to create more democratic votes.

This is why I am now living below my means and this individual is probably still on the doles "EARNING" his stipend, education and other "Assistance".
